LEAP After-school Program

We’re so glad to be a part of the Cullowhee United Methodist Church and community!

The LEAP program is a grant-funded after school program that serves students who are learning English as a Second Language (ESL) or have become proficient at it, but still need academic support. LEAP students all come from Cullowhee Valley School and the majority also participate in the free and reduced lunch program.

The LEAP program utilizes many of the upstairs rooms as well as the Small Fellowship Hall.

Our program goals are to help students with homework and expose them to activities and events they might not otherwise be able to experience. We provide ESL instruction, homework tutoring, free choice activities as well as club activities throughout the school year.

When our program started in May of 2015, we had about 13 students who regularly attended. It has grown to 50 students, and we are at capacity! Many of our families speak Spanish, but others speak Zapotec, Mandarin, Arabic and, of course, English. It’s a cultural paradise of fun, laughs, love and learning.

We also want to express gratitude to the church community for its role in helping us to pull off such an important program: the folks who help out with snacks, the use of the church space, and the folks who are on staff at CUMC have been instrumental.

We are so glad to be here and we hope you stop by and see what we’re up to!
