Every year at Whee Read, we not only prevent the “summer slide” in reading but produce statistically significant gains of as much as 2-3 months’ worth of reading progress. We enroll 30 students for our 5-week program.
The program is a Duke Endowment-supported, community-wide effort that our church is fortunate to be a part of. We need your help, not only financially but also with your time. Thank you for making a measurable difference in the lives of young people.
How You Can Help
Give to the Program
Your gifts directly support the reading growth of rising 1st-3rd graders in Jackson County.
You may give with cash, check (made out to Cullowhee United Methodist Church), through our online portal, or via Venmo (@cullowheeumc).
Volunteer
Reading Buddy volunteers are needed on Thursdays and Fridays from 12:30-1:00 p.m. Each child is paired with an adult to practice their reading, with the hope that each can receive one-on-one time. It’s only 30 minutes out of your day, and also during the lunch hour. Sign up for as many spots as you would like. Thank you for serving in this important way.
Additionally, the church is providing meals for the kids on select days this year. The menu is already selected. All you have to do is purchase the items and have them at the church by the time on the sign-up.

Book-A-Thon Fundraiser
Love to read? Put your passion to work for kids in Jackson County!

- Find sponsors who will pledge $10 per book for every book you read.
- Read as many books as you can while our camp is in session.
