Scarlette Pless

Minister of Christian Education and Spiritual Formation

Scarlette Pless has been serving as Minister of Christian Education and Spiritual Formation since June 2021. She is a graduate of Western Carolina University (B.A. in Religion & B.S. in Communications) and Pfeiffer University (M.A. in Practical Theology). After she received her master’s degree and served as a Christian Education Director for 4 years in her hometown of China Grove, Scarlette and her husband, Ryan, moved back “home” to Cullowhee in 2016. When she was in undergrad at Western, she loved worshipping and being involved with Cullowhee UMC as well as the Wesley Foundation. She loved CUMC so much, she became a member. When they moved back, they could not wait to connect with their church family again. For the past five years, Scarlette has been teaching at Cullowhee Kids Preschool, working with the children and families of our church, the Wesley Foundation and volunteering with our youth. She looks forward to teaching our children the stories of the Bible, being the hands and feet of Jesus with our youth and walking alongside the families of our church on their faith journey. When not at the church, Scarlette has fun with her 3 adorable dogs and 1 cute kitty (oh, and her husband too).

Jay Hinton

Director of The Wesley Foundation campus ministry

Jay has been serving as the director of the Wesley Foundation since 2008. Before that, he served in the same role for 5 years at Ohio University. His roles focus on helping college students at Western Carolina University connect with each other, contribute to the communities near and far, and celebrate God. He enjoys making an environment where ALL students feel welcome and safe in their pursuit to know Jesus and love each other. He is especially glad to work in a non-traditional environment where things such as holding an annual haunted house, biking trips, and delivering meals on wheels are ministry. Jay is a graduate of Georgia Southern University with a B.S. in Recreational Therapy and an M.S in Health Administration. He can often be found watching the English Premier League, editing Wesley videos, going for long runs, mountain biking, and kayaking or hiking with his family.

Damon Sink

Choir Director

From the Western Carolina University website

Damon Sink is a faculty member in the Commercial and Electronic Music program where he teaches courses in MIDI, synthesis, and recording arts, and directs the Music Technology Ensemble. Dr. Sink teaches course in the fundamentals of music technology, including MIDI and sequencing: the computer protocol that lets electronic instruments “talk” to each other and facilitates human performance; synthesis: creating, layering and manipulating sound; as well as studio techniques that integrate virtual instruments with recorded sound.

In addition to his creative work as a composer, Dr. Sink is active in other areas of media production, advertising, video, film, and classical and jazz recording. Before coming to Western, he served as a full-time member on the faculties of Xavier University and The University of Dayton and founded dalSegno Media, an audio/visual production company. Other academic pursuits include topics in the history of music theory as well as the development of rich media modes of analytical presentation.

Damon is married to Barb Sink and they have 2 college aged children, Laura and Phillip.

Sue Heckert

Administrative Assistant

Sue has been employed at Cullowhee UMC since 1996, first as a teacher for the 4 year olds and director in the church’s Cullowhee Kids Preschool and then as an Administrative Assistant for the church and the Wesley Foundation. She has a B.S. in physical education from Frostburg State University, Maryland and a M.S. in physical education with a concentration in  special education from the University of New Mexico. Sue lives by the Girl Scout motto of “To help where I am needed”.

Sue and her husband Paul have lived in Cullowhee since 1987 raising their three children, Jessica, Carina and Paul S. Outside of church Sue enjoys her horse Skee, taking the family dog Thea on walks, doing Zumba classes, biking, quilting and going on Wesley Foundation and Cullowhee UMC mission trips.  Two of Sue’s quilted wall hangings are in the church office.

To add to Sue’s busy life, a grandson and granddaughter were born during the pandemic which has meant many cross country driving trips to Texas to visit her her grandson and trips to Washington D.C. to visit her granddaughter.
