The Nailbenders is a group of men and women who go out in the community to help build ramps in conjunction with the Jackson County on Aging.
The Nailbenders “came to be” after the flooding devastation of Clyde, N.C., 30 minutes from Cullowhee, NC. Two back-to-back hurricanes, Ivan and Francis, in the fall of 2004 hit Western North Carolina pretty hard. The Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church set up a Disaster Recovery Center following the hurricanes to rebuild Clyde. Every week for 4 years, Cullowhee UMC sent the Nailbenders to help with the rebuilding. After Clyde recovered, the Nailbenders continue their work in their home of Jackson County helping where they are needed.
Anybody can help as a Nailbender, no experience necessary. They will teach you to use power tools safely.
