Middle School Youth group is for 6th-8th grades. High School Youth group is for youth in 9th-12th grades. Any youth in the community are welcome to attend and do not need to be a member of Cullowhee UMC. We encourage the youth to invite friends. Scarlette Pless and Alena Strahan lead the middle school, and Julia Trantham, Paul Heckert and Ryan Pless lead the high school.
During the school year, both groups meet regularly on Sundays from 4-6 p.m. for activities and service work. Occasionally, they have special activities, and they may meet earlier or later on Sunday. In the summer, a mission trip is usually planned. This past summer the high school group went to Florida to work on homes damaged by hurricanes, and the middle school students went to Charlotte, NC with Cross Missions.
Another yearly activity is backpacking on the Appalachian Trail through Wilderness Trail camp near Troutville, Virginia. Many of the youth come back saying the experience was life changing.
Regular Youth Group meetings will resume the end of August 2019.
Cross Missions Trip for Middle School Youth July-August 2019
The Middle School Youth, led by Scarlette Pless, will be volunteering with Cross Missions, a ministry through Myers Park Presbyterian Church (right next to Queens College) in the Myers Park area of Charlotte. They will be housed at the church and each day will work at two different non-profits in Charlotte. Scarlette took Middle School Youth on this mission while at a previous employment position. The youth found the experience life changing and a huge blessing to build relationships with each other and the homeless of Charlotte. The trip will be July 28-August 2. For more information, contact Scarlette Pless, 704-797-1603 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Wilderness Trail Adventure for Middle School Youth June-July 2019
The middle schoolers will attend Wilderness Adventure, June 27-July 3. Wilderness Adventure is located near Damascus, VA. with the Appalachian Trail close by. Wilderness Trail is a backpacking ministry that takes people out of their comfort zone and places them in the beauty of God’s creation. The youth will hike the AT during the day carrying everything they need in a pack, set up a different camp each night and then hike to a new camp the following day.
